Sabarna Roy – A Perfect Concoction Of Art & Science
The most unique thing about inspirational Sabarna Roy is not that he is a celebrated author or an engineering expert, but that he excels in both roles simultaneously.
An Engineer by profession and Author by passion, Sabarna has emerged as an awardwinning writer, globally renowned for his multidisciplinary writing skills.
In that sense, he is a perfect concoction of Art + Science. “Authors are often seen as far removed from scientific and tech issues. But not me, I have equal interest in both, including the green energy sector. I like to explore all subjects. I think my biggest feat is that I can accomplish different kinds of writing – interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary. That is what differentiates me.”
Born in Kolkata in 1967, Sabarna imbibed his interest in science, math, and social science from his parents at an early age. He remains full of gratitude for the path they showed him. He went on to obtain a Bachelor’s in Civil Engineering from Jadavpur University and an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Arts from Universidad Azteca, Mexico.
He began his professional career as a Senior Engineer in 1988. From 1996-2023, he worked with the Kolkata based Electrosteel group where he rose to Senior Vice President – Business Development. Presently, he is the DI Business Head – Sales & Marketing, at the Sandur Manganese & Iron Ores Ltd. in Bengaluru.
After almost 2 decades in engineering, Sabarna felt that “If I do not write, I will die.” Passionate about writing, he vividly remembers maintaining a diary and journaling since he was 14. But as is often the case with most great writers, he was self-critical and doubted his capability.
“I never hurried into publishing. I can’t be like youngsters today, who get published through selfpublishing platforms without proper editing only to be labelled as a writer. I have nothing against them, but it’s not the best route for quality work. I respect writing too much and took it up seriously only in 2007 after I turned 40 and felt there was something substantial.”
His first published book was an anthology of 20 English poems titled – Pain, published in 1986. Throughout the 2 decades, he wrote on and off until he returned to writing in 2007. His first book – Pentacles, was published in 2010. He has since penned nine literary fiction works, most of which are critically acclaimed bestsellers.
A multifaceted author, Sabarna has also written three technical books, while his book – Fractured Mosaic, has been converted into an Amazon Audible Book by American elocutionist Grant Tharp. Not one to compete with others, he tells us, “I like collaborations. Like the one I did recently with Sita Bhaskar for – Tara and Sandy: Slow Dance of Infinite Stars, which released last year.”
A Goodreads author with a rating of 4.05 and reviews and ratings more than 3,500 on Amazon, Sabarna enjoys a huge fan base among women who find his writing empathetic and non-judgmental. He credits this ability to the 4 powerful women in his life. “No person can be successful without the support of family and employer. When I was writing my 8th novel – A Marriage, an Affair, and a Friendship, I was going through a depressing phase. My wife had been diagnosed with stage 1 cancer of the uterus, we had property issues, and there were other things preoccupying my mind. The novel yet turned out crisp and concise, which was very satisfying.”
Fortunately, Sabarna’s wife recovered, and the couple moved to Bengaluru. How does he find the time to excel in two diametrically opposite fields, we wonder. “If you have the will, you can read and write intensively. And if you work smart, you can always finish your work in the stipulated time and dedicate your free time to pursuing your passion.”
Thanks to his rare strength of patience and perseverance, Sabarna has been honoured at the highest echelons. He’s a TEDx speaker; was the Guest of Honor at Aaveg 2021 Literature Festival in Lucknow; and is regularly invited to various Literary Meets and Institutional Panel Discussions.
